The federal fiscal year (FFY) 2014 priority corridors study focused on priority arterial segments that were identified in the Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) as needing maintenance, modernization, safety, and mobility improvements. Selected for study was the Route 140 arterial segment in Franklin. This study, which may be accessed via the link below, discusses the background, data, analyses, and recommended improvements for Route 140 in Franklin.

The study identified a number of problems in the segment including safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists, inadequate accommodation for bicyclists, lack of left-turn lanes to access business areas, outdated traffic signal timing, and poor traffic operations.

Working with representatives from MassDOT’s Highway Division and the Town of Franklin, MPO staff developed recommendations for increasing safety, improving access to business areas, accommodating bicyclists, and making traffic operations more efficient. If the recommendations are implemented, the result would be an improved roadway corridor—one that is modernized to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists; safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists; and a roadway where traffic operates efficiently.
