Owing to the safety and operational benefits of modern roundabouts, they have been increasingly in favor throughout the Commonwealth in the last decade. The Highway Division of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and the MPO evaluate requests for roundabouts from municipalities and also conduct assessments of intersection improvement alternatives under other circumstances. The purpose of this study was to create a screening tool for determining whether, at a given location, a roundabout is a viable alternative worthy of further analysis and design. MPO staff, working with an advisory task force, developed such a tool. It will be useful for MPO communities as well as for transportation agencies.
